Outdoor Recreation Explores Worley’s Cave
In early February Outdoor Recreation staff and twelve participants woke up before the sun, crammed into transit vans, and journeyed four hours west. The destination: Worley’s Cave located in Bluff City, Tennessee.
Upon arrival, staff and participants put on their water-proof attire, strapped on hard hats, turned on their headlights, and entered the mouth of the primitive cave. Within only a few minutes, participants were “oohing” and “aahing” at the limestone stalagmites, the soda straws hanging down from the cave ceiling, the unbothered brown bats, the drip pools, and the shear magnificence of the natural world.
Some participants were even brave enough to get down on their stomachs and wiggle their way through cave crawl spaces. The highlight of the trip was trudging through the chilly, river water that flows through parts of the cave. No one left the cave without wet shoes and muddy clothes! After tramping over rocks and through water and army crawling on elbows, the group made their way to The Comeback Shack in Boone, NC for some well-deserved milkshakes and burgers!
