Exciting Changes Coming to Sherwood Park!
New Playground, Pickleball Courts, and Picnic Shelter!
Sherwood Park is undergoing significant improvements that will enhance its facilities and provide new recreational opportunities for the community. These updates are part of our broader effort to modernize the park and ensure it meets the needs of all visitors. As we continue to celebrate 100 years of parks and recreation in Durham, we are beyond proud of the construction projects and maintenance taking place at Durham parks, trails and facilities. These improvements are made possible through funding from the City’s Equitable & Green Infrastructure, Half Penny for Parks Tax, and Capital Improvement Project programs. This investment reflects the city’s commitment to providing equitable access to high-quality parks and recreation facilities for all residents. Learn more about the upcoming changes at Sherwood Park below.
Practice Football Field
Work is currently underway to transform the former ballfield into a practice football field. Conveniently located near the parking lot and restroom building, this new addition is set to be completed by Fall 2024. The field will provide a dedicated space for local teams to practice and hone their skills.
Playground Renovation
In July 2024, the Sherwood Park playground and the adjacent former tennis court were demolished to make way for a brand-new playground. The old play equipment, which had served the community for 25 years, will be replaced with state-of-the-art structures chosen by local residents. Installation of the new playground equipment will begin in January 2025, with the grand reopening scheduled for Spring 2025. This new playground promises to be a vibrant and safe space for children to play and explore.
Pickleball Courts
Pickleball enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that an old basketball court is being converted into a lighted 3-court pickleball facility. This project is currently in progress, and while the completion date is still to be determined, the new courts will provide a fantastic venue for this rapidly growing sport. The park’s main basketball courts near the parking lot will remain available for use.
Picnic Shelter Replacement
The Sherwood Park picnic shelter, which had become irreparable, was demolished in July 2024. We are actively seeking funds to replace the shelter in a new location within the park, potentially adjacent to the futsal courts and restroom, away from the floodplain. This new shelter will offer a great spot for family gatherings, picnics, and community events.
Upgraded Walkways
As these exciting projects progress, the park’s walkways are also being upgraded. The new walking paths will connect visitors to the various amenities, making it easier and more enjoyable to explore everything Sherwood Park has to offer.
Bridge Over Goose Creek
The bridge over Goose Creek is currently under engineering review for design and permitting. The bridge is slated for replacement in 2025, ensuring safe and reliable access for park visitors.
Sherwood Park is on its way to becoming an even more vibrant and welcoming community hub. We look forward to seeing these improvements come to life and encourage everyone to stay tuned for more updates as the projects progress!
