Durham Parks and Recreation Celebrates National Falls Prevention Week with Informative Workshops
Every year, National Falls Prevention Week serves as a vital reminder of the importance of taking proactive steps to prevent falls among older adults. Durham Parks and Recreation is proud to join this nationwide initiative by hosting a series of workshops aimed at enhancing fall prevention knowledge and skills within our community. This year's lineup includes workshops on "Techniques for Getting On and Off of the Floor" and "Home Modifications," along with a special "Lunch and Learn" event focusing on building confidence and overall well-being. Join us as we delve into these informative sessions designed to promote safety, health, and confidence.
Workshop 1: Techniques for Getting On and Off of the Floor
Date: September 11th, 11 a.m. - Noon
Location: Community Family Life & Recreation Center at Lyon Park
Getting on and off the floor can be a challenging task for many, but it's an essential skill for maintaining independence and preventing falls. In this workshop, our dedicated experts will provide guidance and demonstrate safe techniques to help you feel more confident in navigating this everyday task. The goal is to practice and enhance these skills within a secure environment, allowing participants to gain the necessary confidence for daily life.
Workshop 2: Home Modifications with Occupational Therapist Samantha
Date: September 15th, Noon - 1 p.m.
Location: Community Family Life & Recreation Center at Lyon Park
Home safety is a crucial aspect of fall prevention. Occupational Therapist Samantha will share key insights about room-specific hazards and practical strategies for making your living space safer. Participants will receive a handy fact sheet to take home, filled with valuable information to help them create a safer home environment and reduce the risk of falls.
Workshop 3: Techniques for Getting On and Off of the Floor
Date: September 18th, 11 a.m. - Noon
Location: Walltown Recreation
Due to popular demand, we are offering the "Techniques for Getting On and Off of the Floor" workshop at Walltown Recreation as well. Attendees will have another opportunity to learn and practice these essential skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for everyday challenges in a secure and supportive environment.
Workshop 4: Home Modifications with Occupational Therapist Samantha

Lunch and Learn: Creating Confidence from the Ground Up
