DPR Celebrates Pride Month
As June arrives, so does an opportunity for communities worldwide to come together and celebrate Pride Month. Durham has a rich history of LGBTQ activism and progress. It is also the home of the Triangle Pride Parade and Festival, the state’s largest pride event held every fall.
DPR honors the philosophy of public parks and recreation---the idea that all people—no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation—have access to quality programs, facilities, places, and spaces that make their lives and communities great.
In this blog post, we explore the meaningful connection between Pride Month and parks, focusing on the valuable contributions made by Durham Parks and Recreation to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.
Parks as Safe Spaces: Parks have long been recognized as safe havens for individuals seeking solace and connection with nature. This inherent quality extends to the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month and beyond. By offering serene surroundings, parks provide LGBTQ+ individuals and allies a chance to relax, unwind, and feel accepted. Durham Parks and Recreation, with its commitment to inclusivity, embraces the notion that everyone should have a safe space to express themselves freely and authentically.
Community Engagement: Pride Month is an excellent opportunity for the LGBTQ+ community to come together, forge connections, and build a sense of belonging. Parks offer a natural gathering place for diverse groups, allowing individuals to engage in various activities and celebrations. Durham Parks and Recreation has been instrumental in organizing events that encourage community engagement.
My Durham Teens: My Durham is the ultimate FREE drop-in teen program designed exclusively for Durham's vibrant young minds. At our program, we believe in the power of providing a safe and inclusive environment where teens can explore their interests, forge new friendships, and unlock their full potential. With a diverse range of activities and experiences, teens will participate in modified versions of some of their favorite activities.
The best part? There's no need to worry about long registration processes or tedious paperwork. To be a part of the My Durham experience teens must simply register.
In honor of this annual observance, we recognize the LGBTQ+ community's history, achievements, and ongoing struggle for equality. Parks and recreational spaces play a significant role in fostering inclusivity, acceptance, and celebrations of joy.
