Centennial Celebration Brings DPR New Playground Renovations
Durham Parks and Recreation has served the Durham community for a century, providing spaces for laughter, vitality, and shared moments. As we embark on the historic celebration of DPR's 100th anniversary throughout 2024, we are thrilled to announce a series of park renovations that will usher in a new era of play, wellness, and community engagement. Join us as we bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, marking the beginning of an exciting chapter for DPR.
One of the jewels in our park system, Whippoorwill Park, is set for a transformation that will delight children and families alike. The beloved "play island" at the center of the park, adorned with equipment that has witnessed 25 years of joy, will undergo a complete makeover. Thanks to the City's Capital Improvement Project and Half Penny for Parks Tax programs, construction is scheduled to commence in Spring 2024, beginning with the demolition of the existing equipment. By Summer 2024, brand-new play equipment designed for ages 2-12, along with state-of-the-art safety surfacing, will take its place. C.R. Wood Park, another cherished destination for families, is in for a renovation of its own. Named after our founding director, the current playground, standing for 24 years, will make way for a modernized play space. Thanks to an Accessibility for Parks grant from the NC Parks and Recreation Trust Fund and the Half Penny for Parks Tax program, construction kicks off in Spring 2024 with the removal of the old equipment. The Summer of 2024 will see the installation of new playground equipment tailored for ages 2-12. Beyond the playground, C.R. Wood Park is set to undergo comprehensive enhancements, making it an even more inviting space for all. Planned improvements include the addition of a year-round restroom, a paved walking path for leisurely strolls, a dedicated game area for active engagement, and shaded seating near the playground for families to relax and connect. This transformative project, funded by an Accessibility for Parks grant and the Half Penny for Parks Tax program, is scheduled to commence in 2025 and aims for completion in 2026. Anticipate a park that caters to diverse interests, ensuring year-round enjoyment for everyone.
As we step into our centennial year, the commitment to providing quality spaces for community enjoyment remains stronger than ever. The upcoming park renovations symbolize a dedication to preserving our rich legacy while embracing a dynamic and exciting future. Join us in celebrating a century of play, laughter, and community as we unveil these transformative changes, inviting residents of all ages to "Play More" in Durham's revitalized parks.
