Breastfeeding Welcome Signs Installed in Durham Parks: A Bold Step Towards Inclusivity in Durham
Durham Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Breastfeed Durham, is excited to announce a groundbreaking initiative to enhance inclusivity and support for breastfeeding families in public spaces across Durham.
Seventeen artistic “Breastfeeding Welcome” signs have been installed in parks throughout Durham as part of this initiative, a collaboration between Breastfeed Durham and the Black Breastfeeding Coalition. The project focuses on enriching East Durham and areas with high infant mortality rates, ensuring that families can feed their infants on demand in public spaces without fear of discomfort or discrimination.
Funded by the Durham Arts Council and Durham County Commissioners, this project not only offers practical support for breastfeeding families but also transforms these signs into artworks that embody the spirit of our community. The creative genius behind these designs is L Jámal Walton, a father and vocal advocate for reproductive justice and inclusion. Walton merges the expressive language of comics with the profound theme of human milk feeding, incorporating symbolic elements like the Durham bull and landmarks such as Duke Chapel. These artworks underscore Durham’s rich heritage and commitment to inclusivity, inviting residents and visitors alike to appreciate the universal journey of parenthood and the importance of creating a supportive environment for breastfeeding families. Walton’s art is also available for purchase at the Breastfeeding Communities Shop.
"We are proud to participate in this initiative to exhibit local art in our parks that depict an inclusive image and welcoming message to all lactating parents, fostering a broader understanding and acceptance of breastfeeding in public spaces," said Mary Unterreiner, Culture and Community Manager. "Parents often ask, 'Where is it safe to breastfeed?' These signs signal to the public that it's safe in Durham’s parks."
